OJ Simpson Urges Courts To Dismiss Lawsuit
OJ Simpson has asked a court in California to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to gain the publicity rights to his name, likeness, and image. The lawsuit was filed in order to try and obtain the millions of dollars needed to pay relatives of Simpson’s murdered ex-wife and her friend. Although Simpson was acquitted of the murders, he was found guilty in 1997 of wrongful death after a lawsuit was filed by the families of the victims.Ron Goldman was also killed along with Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole, and it is Goldman’s father Fred that filed the petition in Santa Monica Superior Court asking for publicity rights to the star’s image and name. A hearing has now been scheduled for both sides to put forward their arguments.
Simpson argued as part of his request for the dismissal of the lawsuit that he lives in Florida, which means that he is not subject to actions in a California court. The legal documents went on to state that the ‘right to publicity’ has moved to Florida.
In his argument, Fred Goldman argues that although Simpson has made a fortune from publicity events such as appearances, signings, and autographs, he has not put any money towards the payment of damages for the wrongful death lawsuit.
