Wal-Mart Workers Awarded $78 Million
A jury has decided that Wal-Mart workers are to receive $78 million in compensation, after the company was accused of violating state labor laws by making employees work off the clock and through entitled break times. This was the minimum amount that had been asked for by the attorney working on behalf of plaintiffs.The attorney now plans to seek a further $62 million, stating that Wal-Mart acted in bad faith. This additional claim will be ruled upon at a later date by a Common Pleas Court judge. Nearly 190,000 employees were involved in the lawsuit against Wal-Mart.
However, an attorney for the company has stated that Wal-Mart will appeal against the class certification of the lawsuit, as well as against the findings made by the jury. He stated “It will be a very broad ranging appeal.”
Claimants against Wal-Mart alleged that they were made to work many additional hours each week without pay, because they were forced to work after hours as well as through breaks to meet the demands of the workload.
