Church Lawyers Want To Overturn State Law
Lawyers for the Roman Catholic Church have come forward in a bid to get a state law overturned in order to eliminate the problem of lawsuits filed against the church for childhood sexual abuse. The lawyers asked a federal judge last week to look at overturning the law, as it had allowed hundreds of lawsuits to be filed over childhood sexual abuse because it provided victims with extended time in which to come forward.One of the attorneys stated that the Roman Catholic Church was being unfairly targeted by the law, and that the church had suffered an "economic holocaust" because of the number of sexual abuse lawsuits that it had had to settle over the years. The law that the lawyers wanted overturned is one that enables adult victims to sue for abuse that went on during their childhood.
However, one of the lawyers working on behalf of victims stated that the money paid out would have come from insurers rather than from the church. The lawyer working for the church stated that the law created a ‘communist blacklist’ and that lawmakers were ‘shaming’ Catholics by imposing the law.
