Lawyer Indicted For Failure To Follow Through On Cases
A prominent East Brunswick lawyer has been indicted after it was discovered that he had been taking fees and retainers from clients but then failing to follow up on their cases. The lawyer, sixty-three year old Kenneth Weiner, was charged with theft by deception. It is alleged that he took nearly eight thousand dollars in retainers from clients, and then simply didn’t work on their cases.The lawyer practiced in criminal and personal injury law, and had been running a practice for over two decades. Weiner, who is said to have had a number of gambling debts, allegedly took between one and twenty-five thousand dollars from various clients as retainers, and then did no work for them. The clients were from Middlesex, Monmouth, Union and Ocean counties.
The punishment for each count of theft by deception can be up to five years, and the prosecutor for the case stated that Weiner made promises and took money for work that he failed to follow through on.
Weiner was a well known lawyer, and had represented a number of clients that had made headlines. It is also reported that he had huge debts as well as a gambling problem.
