Actor Sues Aspiring Sheriff
A man from Wisconsin is being sued by an actor after he changed his name. Andy Griffith, the actor that starred in the Andy Griffith Show, is suing the man for copying his name, claiming that he only did this in a bid to clock up votes and be elected as a sheriff.As an actor, the real Andy Griffith starred as the Sheriff of Mayberry, which was a fictional town. He has now filed a lawsuit against the former William Fenrick, aged forty two, who changed his name legally to Andrew Jackson Griffith.
The lawsuit alleges that the man violated trademark and copyright laws by changing his name to that of the actor, and the suit further alleges that Fenrick changed his name for the "sole purpose of taking advantage of Griffith's notoriety in an attempt to gain votes."
Griffith, aka Fenrick, still did not get elected as sheriff. The actor’s lawsuit asks the courts to make the man go back to his original name, and also seeks unspecified damages, court costs, and a published apology.
