Twenty Year Prison Sentence Recommended For Priest
A jury has recommended a twenty year sentence for a priest accused of sodomizing a boy in the 1970s in downtown St. Louis. Seventy-one year old Rev Thomas Graham is said to have shown little emotion as he was charged and the recommendation was made at St. Louis Circuit Court.The man accusing the priest of sodomy during his childhood is now forty-three years of age. After the recommendation was made on Thursday, the accuser stated: "Justice is served. Five bishops wouldn't remove him. Now the city of St.. Louis is a much safer city."
No indication has been given as to whether the judge hearing the case will follow the recommendation. The judge will be able to recommend less time than recommended by the jury, but not more. This means that depending on the judge’s decision the priest could serve as little as two years.
The defense attorney in the case has urged the judge to look at a lesser sentence. He stated: "Frankly, the verdict shocks me. It certainly confirms our fear that it's impossible to find a fair and impartial jury when the defendant is a Roman Catholic priest and the charges are sex abuse."
