Cancer Victim Receives Over $5.5 Million
A woman who is dying from breast cancer has been awarded over $5.5 million by a Multnomah County jury. The award of $5.7 million was made because radiologists are said to have incorrectly read the woman’s mammogram.Julie Joel was awarded over three quarters of a million dollars in economic damages, and a further five million for pain and suffering after it was alleged that a radiologist from the Oregon Clinic mis-evaluated her mammogram when she attended the Providence Professional Plaza in 2002.
According to reports 58-year-old Joel then went to another clinic in 2004, but was then told that she had advanced breast cancer. According to experts that spoke on behalf of the plaintiff at the trial, another evaluation should have been made on the original mammogram, but the Oregon Clinic claims that there were no abnormalities at that time.
The lawyer for the plaintiff in the case stated: "In our system, when a mistake is made that causes tragic consequences, the person injured is entitled to fair compensation. And the jury passed a fair verdict in this case."
