Dismissed Police Officer Receives $10,000
A $10,000 settlement has been approved by town officials from East Hartford after a female officer who was dismissed accused colleagues of sexual harassment. Angela Ferreira filed her lawsuit after working for the city for just six months, from December 2003 until June 2004.According to the lawsuit a number of colleagues that Ferreira worked with had made inappropriate advances and comments. The lawsuit was filed in US District Court in June. According to town officials the reason for the approval of the settlement was to avoid the cost of a defense in course, which would have cost far more.
One official speaking for the town stated: "The council does not believe there was any violation of law but feels this settlement amount saves taxpayers in the long run. The settlement avoids a costly court battle."
A lawyer for the plaintiff in the case stated: "She looks forward to a successful career in law enforcement and hopes her experience in East Hartford won't hinder her effort to obtain work elsewhere as a police officer."
