Lawsuit Against 50 Cent Dismissed By Judge
A lawsuit that was filed against rapper 50 Cent, aka Curtis James Jackson, has been dismissed by a judge. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Lil’ Joe Wein Music, claimed that the rapper had stolen a line from a former 2 Live Crew member for his 2003 hit ‘In Da Club’.However, the judge went on to dismiss the copyright infringement lawsuit stating that the phrase the rapper had used in his hit song was a "common, unoriginal, and noncopyrightable element of the song". He stated that the line in question was therefore exempt from copyright protection.
The original lawsuit had been filed by attorney Richard C. Wolfe in Miami Federal Court, and was filed on behalf of the Lil’ Joe Wein Music company, which owns the copyright to songs by rap group 2 Live Crew and to solo work by the front man of the rap group, Luther Campbell.
The judge added that the phrase in question made up only a few seconds of a song that was over three minutes long, and that other than the phrase there were no similarities between the works.
