Teachers Suing Teachers’ Union For Fee Returns
The California Teachers’ Association is being sued by a group of teachers for the return of a $60 increase on their annual fees, which is being used in order to finance the fight against Arnold Schwarzenegger’s special election agenda. A recent protest was held outside the Association’s headquarters, with protesters wanting unions to get permission from employees before using their money for the funding of political purposes. It was at this protest that the group of teachers tried to announce their lawsuit.The additional annual fees are being used to fight Governor Schwarzenegger’s plans to change teacher employment regulations and curb the amount spent by the state on education. The teachers’ association has spent over fifty million dollars on political lobbying so far this year making it the largest funder of opposition to the governor’s plans.
The lawsuit was filed on Thursday in the US District Court in San Jose. The plaintiffs are six teachers from California, all of whom are being charged $60 annual fees for three years, which is going towards the cost of funding for political causes.
The plaintiffs tried to announce their lawsuit at the recent protests, where there were union supporters who drowned out the voices of the plaintiffs by shouting ‘shame on you’. One of the plaintiffs said: "To be silenced like that was very intimidating. All teachers in their training and their experience in the classroom know that one of the things they need to teach their children is to listen politely to the ideas of their fellow students and give everybody a chance to talk. And I see teachers out there breaking every rule of civility."
