Seventeen Percent Of Female LA Workers Suffered Sexual Harassment This Year
A recent survey carried out in Los Angeles indicates that although sexual harassment levels are down, a large number of female workers are still experiencing sexual harassment at work. Around seventeen percent of women surveyed – around five hundred women – said that they had been sexually harassed during the past year. The survey was carried out by the Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women.The executive director of the panel, Paula Petrotta, said that the results of the survey were of such concern that she talked to the mayor about addressing the issue by appointing an ombudsman. The report on the survey concluded: “A follow-up formal investigation needs to occur to delve further into the issues of sexual harassment and gender discrimination within the city of Los Angeles.”
The last survey into sexual harassment was conducted in 1992, and the results then were even more worrying, with around thirty-seven percent of women stating they had experienced sexual harassment. However, although the levels of harassment seem to have gone down over the past thirteen years the results are still of concern.
Ms. Petrotta stated: "I think we are doing a better job than in 1992, but we can do more. It still is significant in terms of the morale, the perception, the litigation. The percentages may not be as high, but that's still a lot of people."
