The man, Thomas A. Joseph, claimed in his lawsuit that the newspaper ran a series of articles over a period of time, which linked him and his company to illegal activity through a variety of anonymous sources. He claimed that he and his company, Acumark, were defamed as a result of the articles.
Two million dollars was awarded to the plaintiff by the judge, and the defendants against which the judgement was made included The Citizen’s Voice, The Scranton Times L.P., The Times Partner, and former Citizen’s Voice reporter Ed Lewis. A further one and a half million was awarded to Acumark from these defendants.
Publisher Scott Lynett said: "We are very disappointed in the verdict. We do not believe the facts of the case in any way support this verdict and we intend to appeal."
