Lawyer Sentenced To House Arrest
A federal judge has placed a former Columbus lawyer under house arrest for failing to report cash transactions. The lawyer has been sentenced to house arrest for the period of one year, and will have to wear an ankle device that enables officials to track his movements and monitor his whereabouts.Lew Dye had to give up his law license as part of the deal, and has been sentenced to a further two years probation and was fined twenty thousand dollars. The sixty-one year old former lawyer pleaded guilty to two counts of failure to report cash transactions, which totalled around thirty thousand dollars – the law requires that any amount of ten thousand or above is reported.
The judge told Dye: "An attorney should know to report. The court views the conduct as relatively severe." The monies that went unreported were received by Dye as bail money from defendants charged with drug trafficking.
Dye stated that he was "sorry about this situation and (I) apologize to everyone concerned." He was sentenced to house arrest rather than getting a custodial sentence because he has no previous criminal record.
