Falsely Accused Boy Settles Lawsuit Against State
A 15-year-old boy that was falsely accused of murder seven years ago has settled his lawsuit against the state for $6.2 million. The trial began several weeks ago, and city lawyers were instructed by council to settle the matter as quickly as possible. The settlement now has to be approved by city officials before the boy receives the compensation.The lawyer representing the boy stated: "The parents were satisfied with it and after seven years they wanted to get this behind them." He also added that some of the cash will go toward therapy for the boy. He was accused of the murder of an 11-year-old girl, and at the time became one of the youngest murder suspects in the United States.
A month after being accused, he was cleared when tests showed semen stains on the girl, which could not have come from him. A Chicago man was then accused of the murder, and is currently awaiting trial. Although the city is in the process of settling the claim officials have not admitted wrong doing.
Another boy that was falsely accused of murder in 1998 has also received a settlement from the state totaling two million dollars.
