Georgia State Legislator Could Be Last To Escape Arrest
A Georgia state legislator, Rep. David Graves, has escaped arrest twice for drunk driving because of his position, but he could be the last to receive this immunity because of proposed changes to the law. Both Republicans and Democrats plan to push for a change to a provision that enables those in positions such as Graves to escape arrest.Rep. Rob Teilhet stated: "It's a no-brainer. No one should be above the law." The current law states that legislators "shall be free from arrest during sessions of the General Assembly, or committee meetings thereof, and in going thereto or returning there from, except for treason, felony, or breach of the peace."
Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson stated: "I think most citizens and an overwhelming number of legislators do not believe we are above the law and should be provided any special immunity from arrest. It's an embarrassment to everybody, and we don't believe we need this defense."
Another official added that most legislators were not even aware of the provision until now. In the latest arrest, Graves, who oversees the liquor industry regulations, refused a sobriety test.
