Wrongful Termination Lawsuit Filed By Fire-Fighter
A former fire-fighter from Pasadena has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit after claiming that he was forced into retiring on the grounds of disability after being harassed on the job. He filed the lawsuit against the city in Los Angeles Superior Court earlier this week, and is seeking over half a million dollars in compensation.Carter Stephens claims that he was falsely accused of making personal telephone calls at work, and he was then harassed and had his car tire slashed, had urine, blood, and feces left on his clothes and uniform, and had swastikas drawn on his fire-fighting equipment. He alleges that his locker was broken into around fifteen times, and his car was also vandalized.
The lawsuit further alleges that after Stephens was transferred to another department in 2001, a captain made racist remarks that were about him as well as about black people in general. The lawsuit claims that Stephens had to undergo therapy in 2000 and 2001 for the stress caused by the continual harassment.
After injuring his knee in 2002, Stephens was allegedly told by his doctor that he was fine to return to work, only to be told by a city doctor in 2004 that he was not fit for duty, at which time a disability retirement applications was prepared for him by city officials. His two applications for reconsideration were rejected.
