Delta May Cut Pilot Costs Through Bankruptcy Courts
In a bid to turn around the airline, Delta has shed many jobs and is looking to cut costs on employees, including savings of $325 million a year from pilots. However, the pilots’ union has not agreed to this, and Delta bosses now state that they may have to use the bankruptcy court in order to achieve the savings. It plans to pull back around $930 million annually in total, over a third of which would come from pilot cutbacks.If the airline and the union is unable to come to an agreement with regards to the pilot cutbacks, the Chief Executive of the airline, Gerald Grinstein, has already stated that the company is prepared to use the bankruptcy court to achieve the cost concessions. He simply replied ‘yes’ when asked whether Delta would use the courts in order to have these cutbacks imposed as part of the turn around plan.
He added that the union had not been willing to negotiate with regards to the cutbacks, stating: "We've asked them, but they've not been willing to consent. I don't want to prejudge what they are going to do." He also said that time is of the essence, and that Delta would like the union’s decision by November. "Time is a real pressure on us," he said.
A spokesperson for the union stated that a number of meetings have been held, but that further information is required by the company to aid a decision being reached.
