Gun Dealers Sued By New York City
A dozen gun dealers from five different states have been sued by New York City for the illegal sales of firearms. An investigation was carried out, and it was found that the gun shops involved had sold over three hundred guns illegally, which had then been used in criminal activity between 1994 and 2002.The operation was part of a bid to cut down on the illegal flow of guns in the city. As part of the operation, two people were sent into gun shops to look at firearms, and while one filled out paperwork the other would express interest in the firearm and make payment for it. Gun shops are not supposed to sell firearms if they think that the weapon will be used by anyone other than the person that is completing the background paperwork.
The city has already settled with a number of the dealers that were pulled up as part of the investigation. Others are still being investigated or have had lawsuits filed against them by the city.
The manager of one of the gun shops pulled up as part of the investigation stated that his employees may have thought that the investigators coming in to the shop were a married couple if they had been a man and a woman. He added: 'All of our employees here have been trained. We hope that's not what happened, but if it did we're going to do everything we can to make it right.'
