President Could Sign Bill To Shield Gun Industry From Litigation
It has been reported that President Bush may be signing a bill that could protect the gun industry from legal proceedings and lawsuits resulting from the victims of gun related crimes. This is the first time this measure has proceeded so far along in the Senate so it looks likely that President Bush will get the chance to sign the bill.Supporters of the bill have stated that through this measure higher levels of protection would be provided to the manufacturers, dealers, and importers of firearms who are otherwise at risk of costly lawsuits from the victims of gun related crimes. The Judiciary Committee Chairman stated: "Lawsuits seeking to hold the firearms industry responsible for the criminal and unlawful use of its products are brazen attempts to accomplish through litigation what has not been achieved by legislation and the democratic process."
Although a similar measure was not passed last year due to amendments made by the democrats, this time the bill was aided through four new Republican seats. However, one opponent of the bill stated: "It is shameful that Republicans in Congress are pushing legislation that guarantees their gun-dealing cronies receive special treatment and are above the law."
