Man Arrested As Terrorist Reduces Sum Of Lawsuit
A man who was arrested on suspicion of being a terrorist, and was then tortured, has reduced a four hundred million dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government to thirty seven million. The lawsuit was filed by Maher Arar, after he was arrested on suspicion of terrorism in 2002, and was then deported to Syria, where he was allegedly tortured,However, it was then decided through an enquiry that false information had been passed on about Arar to authorities in the US, and that this was part of the reason why he had been arrested, deported, and subsequently tortured.
A lawyer who had worked on behalf of Arar was amazed that the government had not even made an apology for the mistake, and stated: "The government should have apologized by now. I can not understand why they do not apologize."
Jack Layton, NDP leader, also commented, stating: "The government is working with Mr. Arar's attorneys who have sued the government. We are working on a full compensation and apology and we hope to make progress on that in short order."
