Man With AIDS Imprisoned For Unprotected Sex
A man infected with the AIDS virus has been branded a ‘violent, self-absorbed outlaw’ by a judge, and has been sent to prison after he admitted to having sex with women and girls without protection and without warning them that he was carrying the deadly AIDS virus. The judge stated that thirty-four year old Sundiata Basir "knowingly put uncountable people at grave risk."It has been alleged that the man realized he was HIV positive in 1996 but that he continued to have unprotected sex with various partners, even going as far as to lie to them if they asked related questions. This included his wife, then aged seventeen, and a fifteen year old girl. He also had a long term relationship with a woman who went on to become HIV positive.
Basir pled guilty to a number of charges in relation to the incidents, including child sexual abuse, cruelty to children, and attempted aggravated assault. Around seven victims have been identified so far, but prosecutors believe there may be more.
Basir now faces over twenty-one years in prison.
