Man Charged After Infecting Military Computers
A man has been charged after he was found to have infected hundreds of computers operated by the military in the United States, as well as others, with viruses. The viruses were designed to launch electronic attacks and send out spam emails. It has been alleged that the 20-year-old, James Ancheta, wanted to gain control of ‘armies of computers’ hence he decided to infect them.The man went on to sell access to the infected computers to spammers and hackers, and also downloaded adware in order to make a profit from his actions. The programs he used were sophisticated and powerful enough to affect military systems such as those used by the Naval Air Warfare Center and the Defense Department.
One official stated: "With one command he could redirect thousands of computers to another server he controlled, and instruct those infected computers to pick up or receive the modified adware."
The man could now face up to 50 years in prison after his 17 count indictment. The charges include money laundering, conspiracy, and fraud.
