Major Record Company Settles With Attorney General
A major record company has come to a settlement with the Attorney General after being accused of making payoffs to radio programmers in order to get certain songs played on air and to manipulate playlists. The Warner Music Group came to a $5 million settlement with the Attorney General, Eliot Spitzer after the accusations with regards to the payments were made.This is the second major record company to come to such a settlement following these allegations, and Warner is the third largest record company in the nation. Sony BMG already reached a settlement with Spitzer earlier this year. However, another two record companies, Universal and EMI, have not yet reached any settlements.
Warner has made an apology for the actions of certain employees with regards to the allegations and a spokesperson stated: ''From our perspective, radio cannot be too consumer-driven. The music that people hear on the radio always should represent the highest quality the industry has to offer.''
The company was accused of ‘deceptive and illegal’ practices after it was found that certain employees had paid off radio programmers to play certain songs through the use of electronic goods and tickets to high profile events.
