NWA Can Cut Employees’ Pay
Northwest Airlines has won the right to cut the pay of its employees, and while many wages have already been cut many other changes are expected to come into force as the airline’s labor contracts are rewritten. Over 27,000 employees have already had pay cuts of up to twenty-four percent. The decision to allow the airline to temporarily cut pay and benefits for employees was made earlier in the week by a bankruptcy judge.Following this decision the airline now has to undergo a couple of months of negotiations with three of its unions in order to reach an agreement with regards to permanent contract revisions. In the event that no agreement is reached in the time given, hearings will begin in January with regards to the outright breaking of the contracts by NWA.
At present the bankruptcy judge has allowed Northwest to shave $114 million per year on wages and sick pay from employees. A wide range of staff will be affected, and this includes baggage handlers and ticketing agents. Interim wage cuts have also been agreed for pilots and flight staff.
The bankruptcy judge that agrees to the temporary wage cut measures has stated that his decision enables Northwest Airlines to benefit from some time to negotiate permanent changes. So far, pay cuts have varied from nineteen to twenty-four percent.
