Judge Upholds Money Laundering Charges Against Delay
A judge has thrown out conspiracy charges against Rep. Tom DeLay recently. However, the judge has refused to dismiss charges of money laundering against the congressman, which means that DeLay’s hopes of taking back his post as House majority leader have been crushed. The judge’s decision comes after a hearing that was held late last month.DeLay had to give up his post after being indicted in September. He had held his leadership post since 2003. Although the conspiracy charges against the congressman were thrown out, he is still under indictment hence he is unable to take back his leadership post as he had hoped. An attorney for DeLay argued that the indictment was flawed.
The judge still has to hear further objections to the indictment, and the ruling that was made by the judge will see the case go to trial next year. Earlier this week DeLay was working on a fundraiser with Dick Cheney in Houston, and he declined to speak to reporters and make any comments about the judge’s decision.
However, a spokesperson for DeLay stated that the judge’s decision "underscores just how baseless and politically motivated the charges were." He added that DeLay was "very encouraged by the swift progress of the legal proceedings and looks forward to his eventual and absolute exoneration based on the facts and the law."
