Former Attorney Gets Three To Six Years
A former Souderton attorney has been sentenced to three to six years in state prison after pleading guilty to theft and tampering with public documents. The attorney stole over $800,000 from client estates, some of which included cash that had been left to various charities. Sixty-nine year old Paul Moyer used checks from the estate accounts of two women and pled guilty in September. He had had power of attorney over the estates.The judge stated that Moyer gave lawyers a bad name because of his actions. The Assistant District Attorney stated: "Lawyers are the backbone, for better or for worse, of the justice system, and when they are dishonest, the entire system falls apart."
In addition to his three to six years in state prison, the lawyer must also pay back the money he stole – over eight hundred thousand dollars – to the various estates. The lawyer apologized to the courts for his actions according to witnesses. An attorney for Moyer stated: "It's a very sad way to end his career. It's very sad the whole way around. He was an attorney for 40 years and had a very good reputation."
Moyer was refused his request to serve the sentence under house arrest. The Assistant District Attorney stated: "A state prison sentence is extremely important because it sends a message to the community that this type of conduct won't be tolerated."
