Man Being Sued Over Rock Memorabilia
A man is being sued by a number of rock icons in relation to the promotions, reproduction, and sale of a range of rock memorabilia. The man is accused of the sale and reproduction of thousands of memorabilia items, which are then sold through a website that he operates, according to the allegations made as part of the lawsuit.Among those suing William Sagan are Grateful Dead Productions, members of Led Zeppelin, and members of The Doors. According to the lawsuit Sagan is illegally reproducing and selling these memorabilia items through his site, thus breaking state and federal laws.
Sagan apparently acquired much of the memorabilia after purchasing some of the assets belonging to the concert promoter Bill Graham, which he is said to have purchased via Clear Channel Entertainment. T-shirts and vintage concert posters were among the memorabilia items.
One of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs stated: "Sagan simply doesn't have the legal rights to exploit and profit from the extraordinary success of these musicians. This memorabilia was created in the first place for the purposes of promoting concerts and as gifts for fans and concert crew. Graham himself did not have the right to sell, reproduce or otherwise exploit these materials as a promoter, and neither does Sagan, who was not authorized to purchase these materials and who has absolutely no connection to the artists or their music."
