Settlements Agreed Over Deceptive Marketing
DirecTV Inc, the satellite broadcaster, has reached a settlement with twenty-two states over accusations of deceptive marketing over its offers, although the company has not admitted any wrongdoing in reaching the settlement. The company agreed to pay the twenty two states the sum of five million dollars in payment for a task force employed to track and monitor consumer complaints with regards to fees and small print.In addition to this, the broadcasting giant has also stated that it will be far more clear in the future with regards to advertising offers so that there is no confusion and no further accusation of deceptive marketing. Tracking of the consumer complaints has been carried out over the past five years. No part of the monies paid by DirecTV was a fine.
DirecTV has also stated that it will be refunding unhappy customers. The plethora of consumer complaints were about issues such as lack of local channels, shoddy installation work, reception problems, and fees regarding delays and termination of services.
A Nevada attorney stated: "The states' position is that certain material disclosures were not clear and conspicuous enough." A spokesperson for the company stated: "We agreed to settle to avoid the costs and uncertainties of litigation," adding that there was no finding that the company had violated any laws and that the agreement was totally voluntary.
