However, in the 1970s and 1980s the dangers of asbestos became widely known, and from that time strict regulations were brought in with regards to the use of and working with asbestos.
Over the years, many people have fallen victim to asbestos exposure, but until the 1980s, most did not realize that they were endangering their health and even their lives through exposure to this substance. The dangers of asbestos exposure stem from being exposed to airborne dust and fibers, where the asbestos debris can be easily breathed in or swallowed. In particular, long-term or high-level asbestos exposure can cause terrible health problems and can also lead to an untimely death. In some cases, the effects of asbestos exposure may not even become evident until years after the exposure.
There are a number of health problems linked to asbestos exposure, including scarring of the lungs and respiratory problems. Another serious health issue that can stem from long-term or high-level asbestos exposure is a form of cancer known as mesothelioma. This cancer can affect the heart, lungs, or abdominal lining and has a very long latency period, which means that it can take several decades or more for symptoms to manifest from the time of exposure. Once developed, this cancer can reduce the lifespan of the sufferer to a matter of months, with the average life expectancy from diagnosis being around 6-12 months.
