The decortication process involves the surgical removal of either all or part of the lining of an organ, such as the lung or kidney.
This type of procedure is usually performed on those in the earlier stages of a disease such as mesothelioma, and this procedure aims to remove the tumor through the removal of part of all of the lining of the affected organ, as it is the lining or the cavity of the organs that are affected with mesothelioma. Decortication has become a common form of surgical treatment for those with stage one or stage two mesothelioma.
There are a number of treatments available for patients who have mesothelioma, and surgery is just one of the options. Decortication may form part of the surgical process used in the treatment of mesothelioma, although this will all be dependant on the location of the tumor, the advancement of the cancer, and the doctor’s recommendation based on other factors, such as your age, health, and other factors.
When undergoing decortication, the doctor or health professional will offer advice on how to prepare and what to expect. This is a procedure that may be carried out in a number of different ways, again based on the location of the tumor among other things. Your doctor will always explain the procedure and what you should expect before you go through this surgical process.
