The EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, is a government agency that is responsible for the safeguarding of the environment and human health. The agency is led by Stephen Johnson, and was actually set up in December 1970 by President Nixon. Around eighteen thousand people work for the EPA in all, including scientists, environmental experts, and engineers.
In order to function effectively and provide the nation with the protection that it needs, the EPA has to work closely in conjunction with a range of other agencies, such as local and state government agencies and federal agencies. There are a number of areas that the EPA is responsible for, and its areas of responsibility have steadily increased since its formation in the 1970s. All of the tasks and responsibilities of the EPA are aimed at protection of the environment and protection of human health resulting from environmental issues.
Among the various responsibilities held by the EPA is the responsibility to ensure that the air quality is safe, which means that there should not be dangerous levels of pollutants, such as asbestos. Asbestos can cause a range of health problems including a cancer known as mesothelioma. The EPA has put a number of rules, regulations, and laws in place with regards to clean air, and those violating the laws in relation to the Clean Air Act suffer harsh penalties. In cases of air pollution the EPA arranges necessary testing and samples, and arranges clean up where required.
In addition to this, the EPA is also charged with undertaking research and testing in order to improve the environment for the future. Preservation of environmental quality is important for the future, and the EPA is also involved in this through advanced research and techniques.
