This organ links the pharynx to the stomach and is important in the digestive process performed by the body. The esophagus can be found in all vertebrates. This organ is made up of a number of muscles, and is lined with a mucous membrane. The muscles are used to push food down to the stomach when it passes through the esophagus area.
As with many of the other organs in the body, the esophagus is an organ that can become affected by a range of diseases. Among the conditions and diseases that could affect the esophagus are inflammation, spasms, cancer, hernia, and others. Obviously, in cases of severe diseases, such as malignant cancer, speedy and relevant treatment is required.
Cancer of the esophagus is a disease that affects thousands of people in America each year, and in some cases, this cancer can continue to spread and affect organs such as the lungs, stomach, and liver, as well as other parts of the body. As with others parts of the body, cancer in the esophagus develops when cells start to divide too often and without any control, forming additional tissue masses, which are the tumors.
The risk of cancer of the esophagus can be increased by a number of factors, and this can range from smoking and too much drinking to exposure to toxic and caustic substances that can cause cancer. There are a number of symptoms to look out for with esophageal cancer, and some of these include difficulty swallowing, burning sensation when swallowing, indigestion, vomiting, heartburn, throat pain, coughing, and hoarseness.
