Immunotherapy is a relatively new form of treatment compared to others but has proven effective for many people when used in conjunction with other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation. This is a form of treatment that helps to fight cancer through stimulation of the immune system. To do this, there are a number of options available to use, such as cancer vaccine, antibody therapy, or other immuno therapies.
According to researchers, immunotherapy can help to stop the spread or growth of the cancer and make the immune system more effective in fighting off cancer cells. Immunotherapy is a treatment that has been approved for use with a range of cancers, such as mesothelioma, breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, leukaemia, lung cancer, and others.
In short, immunotherapy aims to fight the cancer cells by using the body’s own defense system, through the development and enhancement of the immune system. This form of treatment can be administered in a number of ways, such as intravenously or in pill form. This form of treatment is also sometimes known as biologic therapy. Among the types of immunotherapies available are active immunotherapies, which stimulate pre-existing immune system components, and passive immunotherapies, which are developed outside the body.
With regards to treatment of mesothelioma with immunotherapy, research is still being conducted by scientists in order to improve the chances of success for more patients.
