Interferon is a protein that is produced by the immune system naturally in order to prevent and fight viruses, infections, and bacteria through the inhibition of viral replication in other cells.
Cultivated interferon was approved at first by the FDA in the 1980s, and there are now a number of different types of interferon that have been approved for use in the treatment of humans. Cancer patients may be treated with interferon therapy, and this is sometimes used in conjunction with other types of cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
As with other treatments, there are often side effects associated with the use of this type of therapy, and some of the side effects may include fatigue, increased temperature, muscle pains, convulsions, headaches, depression, dizzy spells, and loss of hair.
Interferon is also used to treat or prevent other diseases and illnesses, such as hepatitis C, and even to treat and prevent colds and influenza in some areas. When used to fight cancers, interferon affects the manner in which the cells multiply and grow, and in addition to this, it encourages the immune system to fight and kill the cancer cells through the stimulation of certain cells. This treatment is usually administered subcutaneously, although this can depend on the type of illness being treated.
