This organ forms part of the airway that enables a person to breathe, so aiding breathing is one of the important functions of the larynx. The larynx also provides protection to the lungs, stopping them from being damaged through intake of food.
And, as most people know, the larynx or the voice box is also responsible for the production of sound, enabling us to talk and use our voices. The functions that are aided or performed through the larynx are ones that most of us take for granted, and therefore, it can come as quite a shock to the system if any of these functions are adversely affected. However, this is what can happen in the event that the larynx is in some way damaged or becomes infected or affected by disease.
There are a number of diseases that may affect the larynx, such as cancer, and the treatment offered will depend upon the disease, its location, and its severity. These factors will also determine the affect on functions such as breathing, swallowing, and talking. Ligaments, muscle, and cartilage make up the larynx, and any disease or damage to this organ can have a profound affect on related functions.
One serious problem that can affect the larynx is cancer, and if the cancer is detected in good time then treatment may be offered in the form of radiation or surgery, According to statistics, if the cancer is detected early and treated accordingly the cure rate could be as high as ninety-six percent.
