Many people each year die from lung cancer, and the cancer can be non-small cell lung cancer or small cell lung cancer, each of which grows and spreads differently, and is therefore treated in different ways.
Lung cancer is where the cells of the lungs start to produce and divide too quickly and without control, causing a mass, which is called a tumor. Research is still being carried out in the treatment of lung cancer, and there are treatments that are used, such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. However, the treatment will depend upon the cause and type of cancer, and the success rates can vary depending upon the cancer.
In the Western world lung cancer has become known as one of the biggest killers, and those who smoke can really increase their chances of getting lung cancer by up to forty times compared to a non-smoker. Cancer of the lungs has increased over the years, and this is in part due to a rise in the number of people who smoke heavily, although other factors may also contribute to this figure.
Lung cancer has a number of symptoms, many of which are non-specific and could therefore be attributed to other problems and disorders. Some of the symptoms of lung cancer include chronic coughing, breathlessness, intense fatigue, loss of appetite, loss of weight, difficulty swallowing, respiratory problems, coughing up blood, and persistent chest pains.
