The main organs within the body, the lungs, the abdomen, and the heart, have the protection of a double layered, membranous lining, which is known as the mesothelium. The purpose of the mesothelium is to produce a fluid that lubricates the cavities and enables easier movement for the organs within the body cavity.
Unfortunately, although the purpose of the mesothelium is to provide protection for the major organs of the body and allow them to more easily move, it has also become associated with a deadly form of cancer over the years – a cancer that stems from exposure to asbestos, which can affect the heart, lung, or abdominal lining, and for which there is currently no known cure.
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that cannot be cured and has a very long latency period, which means that it could be decades from exposure before the patient actually realizes that he or she has got the cancer. Once the symptoms manifest, however, the cancer has already moved into its later stages, having festered in the body for years. The lifespan of the patient can be slashed to a matter of months.
Mesothelioma is literally cancer of the mesothelium, and this cancer can affect the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or the heart, although the lungs is the most common form. Cancer of the lung lining is known as pleural mesothelioma; cancer of the abdominal lining is called peritoneal mesothelioma; and cancer of the heart lining is called pericardial mesothelioma.
