One method of obtaining such an image is through MRI, which stands for magnetic resonance imaging. This process converts signals into images through radio signals and magnetic fields.
When having an MRI, the patient lies on a special table that is then moved into the magnetic field in order for the scan to be obtained. With an MRI, almost any part of the body can be viewed through obtaining an image, and the MRI can be viewed as a real time, three dimensional image. This process is safe to use on the majority of patients, but there are some patients that may not be able to have this type of imaging carried out, such as those with certain implanted devises or those with claustrophobia.
One of the advantages of MRI imaging is that the soft tissue areas of the body can be more easily viewed, as well as muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This process is not as good as some other imaging processes for looking at bone images, and the MRI imaging process is costly. However, this sophisticated form of imaging does offer many advantages for both the patient and medical staff.
MRI imaging has been used since the early 1980s and has been proven successful in many situations. The clear pictures of non-bony areas of the body make it possible for doctors to make a more effective diagnosis by more easily picking up on problem areas. The detailed imaging makes it easier for doctors and medical staff to pick up on tumors and abnormal growth.
