The type of treatment administered to a cancer patient can depend on a range of factors from the type and location of the cancer to the age and medical history of the patient. Among the common types of treatment used for cancer patients are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment.
In some cases, more than one type of treatment is required, and when a secondary treatment is used along with a primary treatment, this is known as adjuvant therapy or multimodal therapy. Using multimodal therapy can help to ease both the symptoms of the cancer and the pain that is associated with it, and in some cancers, it can increase the chances of the cancer going into remission.
As with singular treatments, the decision with regards to whether multimodal therapy will be used or not and which treatments will be included in the process will depend on a range of factors, such as the cancer itself as well as the patient’s risk factors and medical history. Your doctor or consultant at the hospital will be able to determine whether this type of treatment is suitable for you and could benefit you.
Of course, there is no guarantee of success with multimodal therapy, just as there are no guarantees with single treatments. However, many patients with a variety of cancers have benefited from this type of combination treatment.
