When it comes to the field of oncology, there are a number of specialized areas in which these professionals may work. This can include medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric oncology, and gynecological oncology, among others. Depending on the area in which the nurse wants to move, specialized training and advanced knowledge will be required, and this is obtained through training with agencies and through specialist boards.
Along with oncologists, an Oncology Nursing Specialist will aid the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and will be trained to know what to look for, the treatments that might be best suited to each type of cancer, and how the treatments are administered. The Oncology Nursing Specialist performs an important role in this field, and in addition to assisting with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, he or she can also provide valuable support and advice to patients.
As a cancer patient, you may be referred by your doctor to the oncology department at your local clinic or hospital, and here you will receive care and treatment from both the oncologist and the Oncology Nursing Specialist. The Oncology Nursing Specialist performs a range of duties that aid the smooth running of the department, helps the oncologist to effectively diagnose and treat the patients, and assists the patient.
