This type of cancer can affect various parts of the body, and there are three main types of mesothelioma, which are identified through the part of the body that they affect. This includes pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the heart, peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the abdomen, and pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs.
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of this cancer, and it is estimated that around four fifths of those suffering from this cancer suffer from this particular variation of the disease. Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining and cavity that surrounds the lungs and the inside wall of the chest, where a tumor can form. The cancer attacks the pleura, but because of the long latency period of this type of cancer, which can be several decades, those who have this cancer often do not realize for many years.
Among the symptoms that are associated with this form of mesothelioma are persistent coughing, difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, weight loss, fever, rasping, and coughing up blood. You may also find that you are short of breath all the time, even if you are resting and not being active.
As with other forms of cancer and other variations of mesothelioma, the type of treatment available for this cancer can vary depending on how advanced the cancer is, the size of the tumor, the age of the patients, the medical history of the patient, and more. Among the treatments that are used, you will find surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
