Radiation therapy is a type of therapy that is often used with another method of treatment, such as surgery.
Radiation therapy uses high energy radioactive sources, which are designed to target the affected area in order to try and kill off the cancer cells. This type of procedure is commonly used in the treatment of cancers, such as mesothelioma, and the good thing about this type of treatment is that, unlike chemotherapy, it is able to target the affected areas without damaging any of the other cells.
This type of procedure can also be used as a stand-alone treatment if the patients is not well enough for other forms of treatment, such as surgery. There are fewer side effects associated with this form of treatment than treatments such as chemotherapy, which can cause a range of unpleasant side effects. This type of therapy can be performed externally or internally. External radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy may be combined depending on the type and severity of the cancer.
In some causes, radiation therapy may be used in cancer patients as a palliative procedure in order to ease discomfort and symptoms, such as pain or breathing problems. There are some side effect that are associated with this type of treatment, such as extreme fatigue, skin irritation, and loss of appetite, but the side effects are far milder than with some other forms of treatment for this type of cancer.
