There are two groups that form asbestos. This includes serpentine and amphibole asbestos. Of the three main types of asbestos, there are two that come under the umbrella of amphibole asbestos, which include amosite and crocidolite asbestos. The other main type of asbestos, chrysotile asbestos, comes under the umbrella of serpentine asbestos.
Serpentine asbestos, or chrysotile, which is the asbestos that is in this group, is a layered form of asbestos with curly fibers. On the other hand, the amphibole variation of asbestos has a chain structure and straight fibers. The chrysotile form of asbestos that comes under the umbrella of serpentine asbestos is the main commercial asbestos that has been used over recent years.
As with other types of asbestos, serpentine asbestos can result in a range of health problems that can come about from exposure to airborne dust and fibers, including lung scarring, respiratory problems, and a malignant asbestos related cancer called mesothelioma, which can affect the heart, the abdominal region, or the lungs.
Serpentine asbestos has a wooly look and texture and is not very resistant to being bent or spiralled. The amphibole form of asbestos, on the other hand, is very resistant to bending and spiralling, and has more of a fiberglass appearance and texture.
