There are a number of different procedures that can be used in order to aid diagnosis, and one type of procedure is known as imaging, which enables health professionals to view an image of the inside of the body.
One type of imaging method that is commonly used by radiologists in order to identify abnormalities is known as the x-ray. An x-ray enables medical imaging through the use of electromagnetic radiation. This is one of the oldest methods of imaging still in use today, and it can be used to identify anything from broken bones and inflammation to tumors and masses.
An x-ray is a very effective method that can make a big difference in the doctor’s ability to make an accurate diagnosis by getting a clearer picture of what is going on inside the patient’s body. This form of imaging is often used on cancer patients, such as those with mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer. X-rays are known to be very effective when it comes to getting a clearer picture of the chest area, so it is often used in the diagnosis of patients with lung related diseases.
When an x-ray is taken, a radioactive beam is used to target the area being x-rayed. This then sends a spurt of radiation through the body, which results in the recording of an image of the area onto a special film or plate. Once the image has been obtained, it is carefully analysed by a medical professional who is trained to pick up on abnormalities.
