This entails the removal of a tissue sample, which is then analysed and examined to check for the presence of abnormalities.
There are a number of biopsy procedures that are commonly used to extract tissue samples for examination, and some are less invasive than others. The type of biopsy that will be most suited will be based on your symptoms or illness and other factors. The purpose of the biopsy is to assess the sample of tissue and use it to determine whether or not there are any abnormalities or changes through examination.
Among the various types of biopsy procedures, you will find needle aspiration biopsy, excisional biopsy, and incisional biopsy procedures. The first of these, which is needle aspiration biopsy, is the simplest, as the sample is extracted quickly and simply through the use of a small needle. Excisional biopsy involves the removal of the whole area of affected tissue or the entire growth. With an incisional biopsy, which is also known as a core biopsy, a small sample of the affected tissue is removed for examination.
A biopsy is an important part in the diagnosis of a cancer such as mesothelioma, and once the biopsy has been performed, doctors can examine the sample, determine whether there are abnormalities or not, and decide upon the next course of action if any is required.
