Often, this process is used to target tumors and growths in the upper body region and the head and chest. The process involves the implantation of radioactive materials into the affected area to try and kill off cancer cells and forms a part of the radiation therapy process that is often used to help patients with various forms of cancer.
When brachytherapy is used in the treatment of cancer, a number of radioactive seeds are implanted into the affected area, and the radiation from these seeds can help to kill off the cancer cells in the targeted area. This is a process that has been used effectively for over a hundred years, and thanks to improvements in technology and medical science, it has become known as an effective alternative to surgery.
Brachytherapy procedures can involve the implantation of either permanent or temporary radioactive seeds. With the temporary process, the radioactive seeds that are placed in the body are removed after a while, whereas with the permanent process the radioactive seeds that are implanted into the affected area are left there. The decision in regards to whether temporary or permanent brachytherapy is right for you will depend on the type and level of cancer.
Those receiving this type of treatment will often be treated in a private room, and this because radiation can be dangerous to others, even though it is being used in a targeted way to treat cancer. Therefore, treatment in a private area minimizes exposure to other patients and staff whileenabling the patient to benefit from targeted therapy.
