Most people think of urinary catheters when they think of a catheter, and this is a catheter that is used to drain urinary fluid from the bladder of a patient, with a catheter bag attached, into which the urinary fluid is drained. However, catheters are actually used for a wide variety of purposes, including the drainage of other fluids from the body as well as to get drugs and fluids into the body.
A catheter is basically a tube, and these tubes can be either flexible or rigid in structure. The catheter can be inserted into the body via a vessel or cavity duct, and from here, it can be used to administer or to drain fluids. Both the soft and hard catheters can be used for different purposes. One of the common uses of catheters in patients who have cancer is to administer drugs directly into blood vessels through the use of a catheter during chemotherapy sessions.
For mesothelioma patients, chemotherapy is one of the various treatment options available, and although there are many side effects that are associated with this type of treatment, it is essential to get the necessary drugs into the relevant areas of the body in order to try and treat the cancer effectively. The use of catheters can play an important part in this chemotherapy process for many cancer patients, enabling the necessary drugs or fluids to be administered directly to the affected areas.
