Another common form of adjuvant therapy for cancer patients is known as chemotherapy, and this is a process where certain drugs and chemicals are administered into the body in order to try and destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be very effective for some patients, but there are also side effects associated with this form of therapy.
The drugs that are given in chemotherapy treatment can be administered in the form of pills or as injected drugs. The side effects of chemotherapy treatment can include nausea, vomiting, hair loss, weight loss, and physical fatigue. However, there are also other drugs that can be administered that can help to alleviate the side effects resulting from the chemotherapy.
During chemotherapy treatments drugs are left to find cancerous cells by working their way through the body, and often this can result in additional side effects, as the drugs may affect cells that are healthy as well as abnormal cells. At present, research still continues into finding chemotherapy drugs that are not as toxic as many of the ones in use today, as this could then mean fewer side effects for those receiving these drugs.
There is advice available for those about to receive chemotherapy that could help to ease some of the side effects, such as ensuring that you eat nutritious foods and trying to eat smaller meals several times a day, rather than opting for big meals. Eating something several hours before chemotherapy could also help to ease the nausea, which is one of the most common side effects of this treatment.
