Sufferers of pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lung cavities, can suffer from a build up of pleural fluid, and this can cause discomfort and pose a threat to other tissues. The procedure known as thoracentesis is designed to drain this excess fluid and relieve these problems.
Trachea: The trachea is an important and pivotal part of the respiration system in the human body that is often referred to as the windpipe. This is an airway that runs from the larynx to the lungs and is surrounded by rings of cartilage that ensure that is does not collapse. The inside of the trachea is lined with a mucous membrane as well as with ciliated cells that enable particles to be pushed out of the airway.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Therapy: There are a number of methods and treatments in use today for the relief of pain, and one of these methods is known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. This type of therapy uses electrical signals that are used to stimulate the nerves through the skin, and the placement of the electrodes during this procedure will determine which muscles are activated and where the pain relief is targeted.
Tumor: The word ‘tumor’ actually means swelling, and in the medical world, this term is used to describe an abnormal growth or mass of tissue or cells. Abnormal, uncontrolled cell production can result in the mass that is known as a tumor, but this mass will not necessarily be cancerous. Some tumors are localized and will not spread, and these are known as benign tumors. However, some can spread, and these are known as malignant or cancerous tumors.
